6 Degrees of separation – pah!

Rochester & Associates - IT Support Services

Research has shown that there is only 3.74 degrees of online separation or "When considering another person in the world, a friend of your friend knows a friend of their friend."

Online research has smashed the myth of 6 degrees of separation – that is the theory that there is only 6 people between you and any given person on the Earth.

This new research from Facebook shows that there are only 3.74 people between you and anyone else or ”When considering another person in the world, a friend of your friend knows a friend of their friend.”

Personally I think that this is a little misleading; Some people on social networks tend to accept friends from whom ever asks, not people they ‘know’. This must massively skew the statistics as it appears to assume that users know the people in their social networks.

Known as Dunbar’s Number this number is viewed as the theoretical number of people you can have social relationship with – something that should be applied to the Facebook degrees of separation research methinks.

Google+ opens its doors

Rochester & Associates Ltd - Blog Post

Google+ opens it's doors, with over 10 Million users already!

Google+ finally revealed itself to the public today.

For those who may not have heard about it, it’s a new social networking site from the guys that brought you searching.

It has been running behind closed doors for about 2.5 months and went ‘live’ today – with over 10 Million users.

This was achieved by use of an invitation system, allowing those privileged few who got the original invites to invite friends and colleagues etc. They also made it ‘cool’ to be one of those who got an invite - Viral marketing for want of another phrase.

It has already been praised for having some innovative features – grouping who sees what with ‘Circles’, ‘Hangouts’, where you can video call your friends, and some cool mobile apps.

Anyhow, now it’s there and no doubt coming to a screen near you soon…

Have a read…

Google+ opens social network to everyone

If you are wanting to visit and/or join:

Stupid or stupider?

Stupid customers or stupider posters on Facebook?

Stupid customers or stupider posters on Facebook?

There were a couple of news articles which have caught my eye this week the first is almost deserving of a ‘Donkey Award’:
Gadget shoppers branded ‘stupid’
Put simply there is a Facebook group for employees or former employees of the DSGi group (the owners of Currys, PC World and Dixons etc).
In this group some morons seem to have forgotten that Facebook is a public forum ~ visited often by members of the press; Imagine their surprise when news that there had been many postings branding customers as ‘Stupid’ broke.

The shock must have been amazing!

now it’s one thing to post on a public forum saying your customers are ‘stupid’, it bring a whole new meaning to the word when you consider they were using THEIR OWN NAMES to post.

Images of Homer Simpson slapping his head and the quote ‘D’oh’ resounding spring to mind.
Bloomin’ idiots…

In another amazing little article – Small town ‘online crime hotspot’ – it was reported, Shilden in county Durham is the UKs online fraud capital.

Not bad when you think that the town only has a population of 10,000! :???:

To see if you live in a high cybercrime area consult this PDF for your postcode area (you might need the Adobe Acrobat Reader to view) - Online Fraud Map

What..?

What is the point of Twitter?
Do people REALLY want to know what I’m doing at any given time?
If I were an international superstar, then I could see that some socially bankrupt individuals would like to know what I was doing, (obviously some peoples lives are so boring they need to know that others are doing something interesting).

I’m not an international superstar… (yet)

I DON’T UNDERSTAND!! :???:
