Staff

Heard a shocking tale today – unfortunately I can’t retell it :(

Suffice to say that a client of ours has had a staffing issue. It looks like it’s not going away painlessly though.
The person in question is being a jerk.

Employment law in the UK sucks :( (from an employers point of view)
It seems to be vastly weighted toward the employee in the case of any dispute.

Hmm…

I’ll save that rant for later ;)

Big brother?

Soon to announced as a prophet?

Soon to announced as a prophet?

George Orwell – Writer and visionary it seems…

As of March 1st THIS LAW comes into effect, that is to say EVERY email you send will have the details of where it came from and/or where it is going to retained. :(

All in the name of ‘preventing terrorism’

It’s only a matter of time until the subject of that email is retained as well.
Imagine being involved in a highly classified research project and having ALL your emails retained by your ISP – there goes that patent then!

Now I don’t usually agree with the human rights group ‘Liberty’ but they have called it “attack on civil liberties” adding

“The thing we have to worry about is what happens next because the government is already mooting plans not just to leave this stuff with the providers but to create a central government database where they hold all the information.
“I’m afraid we just don’t trust any government or any organisation to keep that much very sensitive information about us all and to keep it safe.”

(full article from the BBC here)

From an ISPs point of view this is a nightmare.
Imagine if you will…
Our ISP handles on average 30 – 50 MILLION emails every day.
The average size of these emails (the bit the ISPs need to store) is about 10k
10k * 50  million =477Gb
477Gb per day for 12 months = 170Tb of data
That’s a LOT of data to keep on the off chance you MIGHT be a criminal (and don’t happen to use encrypted email or a private email circuit etc…)
That means all ISPs offering email services must, by law, retain 170Tb of our emails, in their already over subscribed data centres. (all +£££s)

Boredom

Today we (Tor and I) spent MOST of the day entering data for a clients website.
This was incredibly tedious – dull dull dull! :?:
It does mean however, that the site will be launched will a full range of products available – and online ordering from the outset. :)

Also, we are the people to ask if you want school uniforms ;)

I was AMAZED to discover some of the sizes some items go up to! There were one or two items that would be too big for me!

It’s not good for the old grey cells though – I think most of mine have declared a cease fire and migrated south to warmer climes.

Found this on the BBC website - Police ‘encouraged’ to hack more
Now this is seriously scary!
It would appear that Police now have the power to hack into any body’s PC to “prevent or detect serious crime”

British law already allows police to remotely access computers under the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000, which allows surveillance to “prevent or detect serious crime”.

It’s getting worse, Police state or nanny state – you decide…
