Heads you win :)

Somethings are complicated enough to NEED a geek!

Somethings are complicated enough to NEED a geek!

Today I met with our friend and colleague to give him a heads up on the technologies he’ll be working with for a potential client.
My role was simply to make sense of the setup at the clients site (they are hosting their own website), so the developers could make the site sing :)
It took a while to get hold of the administration passwords, but once found and logged in, we were given free reign to “ferret around” ← Clients words, not ours ;)
I backup up a copy of the website, added a secure FTP account AND hopefully proved invaluable to the webdevs themselves :D

I’m such a helpful geek ;)

Tor got a call later today saying (I think) that the guys were sucessful with the pitch – I hope my bit helped…

On a more personal note – I had a dreaded Migraine yesterday. They HURT!
The word itself – Migraine – has been much abused over the years; now it seems to mean a headache.
THOSE OF US WHO SUFFER KNOW THE DIFFERENCE!
For those who are free from this affliction, feel lucky!

I started getting my personal aura about 10:00ish, an unusual blurring of the vision making focussing on one thing almost impossible; this rapidly progressed into the inability to think clearly (some would say this is normal for me ;) ) and on into forgetting simple words.
I HAD to set off home before it got worse. Amazingly the journey was traffic free – someone looking out for me :)
Got home, went straight to bed, woke around 17:00 when my GF came home.

That was Thursday!
I missed going to the Theatre too!

Hopefully it’s going to be a good weekend – I have to mow the lawns :(
There may be beer…

#Nice list of tags on this post – sometimes you wait for ages for a good one to come along, then before you know it, they are all there at once!#

iPood

Speak & Spell - voiced over by Stephen Hawking

Speak & Spell - voiced over by Stephen Hawking

Title spelling intentional ;)

So Apple have unveiled their latest money wasting piece of iPood technology:
New talking iPod Shuffle unveiled

I must be getting old – down at the bottom of the article, there’s a sample of the iPood announcing a song – Speak & Spell anyone??

For those of you of a less antediluvian nature Speak & Spell was an ‘educational’ toy from the 70s and 80s – most of the time we simply made it swear or generally say rude words though ;)

Nostalgia freaks will love this:
Speak & Spell Emulator

With the possible exception of the deranged nature of designers and their affinity for the PCs, I totally miss the point of the Apple brand – it’s true that, in general, they tend to do a better job of presenting a PC to the outside world and ‘Just Work’ (this is NOT true but the Apple fraternity like to perpetuate the myth; If yours does have an issue getting support is like looking for the proverbial rocking horse manure – there are also viruses that effect Macs too)

The iPod’s sound quality is inferior to its contemporaries AND the cost is higher too – why would people pay MORE for an inferior product???
It can’t be the fact that it’s got a ‘snazzy’ interface alone, can it?

Maybe it’s Maybelline?
More likely people just can’t see the wood for the trees… :?:

Emperor’s new clothes methinks

Sinusoidal

Sinusoidal because today was full of ups and downs.

Popped over to see someone we haven’t seen for YEARS – he’s got a good database project for us. :)
During the end of the meeting he asked if I knew anything about Teleconferencing – Yup (I used to install the Tandberg units) so I got to play with a Polycom one :)
Found out it wasn’t correctly connected to the ISDN – and found out several other engineers had missed it (including BT!) :D
On to a winner so far…

Steps out of the meeting feeling good – totally flat tyre – puncture :(
Luckily I carry a pump – few minutes later I’m going to the garage – new tyre (more expense) :(
Notices the time – too late for any food, got to go to my next appointment… :(
Feeling sad…

Gets to my next appointment – need to fix a failing web cam – fails to fix it :(
Gets home feeling pretty unhappy, have to go food shopping. This has the mind numbing effect of making me forget my woes and acts almost like therapy

It started good – fell flat in the middle but I’m feeling neutral now it’s bedtime

Hoping for a better day tomorrow…

Additions

Today I was tasked with the mission (should I have an option NOT to accept it):

Create a directions page to our office, from the M606 and from Leeds city centre…

I think I did a reasonable job:

Directions

I also have another mission – having installed a multi-monitor solution, I need a multi-monitor sized box thing to stand them on.
They are a little low at the moment – Get out the big boys tools and save myself a lot of neck ache (this of course does not in any way refer to a pain in the neck ;) )

My creation was truly a masterpiece to behold – actually a simply wide ‘n’ shape was what was finally produced…
It’s good though, and performs brilliantly. I guess that’s the main criteria fulfilled then.

:D
