It’s amazing

just when you think that you’ve just about got there with this website stuff, something comes along and says “HEY I’M NOT RIGHT!!”
I had to add a few extra bits to the page styling to get images embedded in posts to look correct:

Charles Babbage

Charles Babbage - Creator of 'The Difference Engine'

This image is of Charles Babbage, the founding father of computing and one of my all time technical heroes.

You’ll notice that the image is framed in it’s own little box, with a funky little caption along the bottom, with this text nicely positioned to the left. Previously (before I added the extra styling code) this image would have been all on it’s lonesome – kinda floating.

Let’s hope that there is little more to ‘fix’

For those who can’t be bothered to click the link and educate themselves:

Babbage is credited with inventing the first mechanical computer that eventually led to more complex designs.

Quiet

It’s been the same as always for the last few days…
Nothing of note happening…

This is a rare thing!

Tor has gone to the wilds of Wales for the week so – to coin a phrase – I’m on me tod!
(soon I shall blend in to the local population ;) )

Economy

In light of recent UK and global happenings in the business world, we get asked quite frequently “how’s business?”
In truth, when you ask business people in general, there is an ethos of never saying anything bad – these are the people who are perpetually busy and making millions of £££s – AKA twisters of the truth (there is a more crass, single word name, but I’d never be so rude ;) )
When you get people who you’ve been doing business with for a while, you tend to get the real answer…

These are quite times…

For us though things are a little different.
We have almost a 2 sided business, things that need fixing (support) and things that are new (projects).
We spent a LONG time getting enough regular support  work to maintain our business, and as a result, the project work is usually where the profit comes from – Yes, I know it’s not that simple, but I’m a simple guy! ;)

We are seeing a significant drop off in the number of projects we are running with, but the support seems to be stable (nothing unusual n the support side then).
I think most businesses are seeing a similar picture – and that generally businesses are keeping hold of their cash ‘just in case’.
A prudent move methnks!

Further details

Ohh yes!!

In a ‘further news’ type thing from yesterday, I found this:

18 held as police tackle road crime

It looks like things were a lot more in depth than the little we watched yesterday!
As we are in the BD3 area, this little snippet was of some interest…

The BD3 area, including Barkerend, Bradford Moor and Thornbury, was identified in last month’s Motor Insurers Bureau figures as the worst in the country for uninsured drivers, with two-thirds of car owners not having valid insurance.

Hmm…

Also, Tor got a text just before going to a meal with friends:
“Please bring dinner slaves”
Upon asking what exactly ‘dinner slaves’ were (images of scantily clad waiting staff in mind), is was pointed out that predictive text decided to guess at ‘slaves’ instead of ‘plates’!

Hooray!!

Tor and I had great glee in watching the Police today.
They seem to have some kind of crackdown on road tax and insurance going on.
We witnessed 3 car drivers getting stopped, questioned in the back of the cruiser, then have to collect their belongings from their cars and WALK away :D
The Police then stuck a huge sticker somewhere obvious reading:

No insurance means no car!

In big letters…

Good!
Now there’s only a few thousand more to go before my insurance premiums come down (I’m ever the optimist ;) )
