OMG!!

Oh my goodness – for those not in with geek speak ;)

BT – that purveyor of poor service, that pinnacle of the pathetic – a paragon of the plebeian…
You get the idea, I’m not usually impressed. :)
BUT WAIT!!
Today they came in to the new office, did the necessary and left me with a working phone line at the time specified and minimal fuss!!

At the risk of repeating myself
OMG!!!

The funny thing is, I pencilled out the whole day for this little episode – only to be left with nothing in the diary for the day
But, as usual, you can rely on the great god Microsoft for some problem to raise it’s head.
So the day was sufficiently fun for all…

Dial 911

There was a ‘dire’ emergency yesterday.

Whilst ‘cleaning’ a laptop of rubbish (software no longer used, spyware and temp stuff etc.)
Tor called and asks:
“What do you know about DOS?” – Simon has flashbacks over a 10 year period…
“A client has just spent £120,000 on IT equipment and it doesn’t work!” – Sounds interesting…

So off I pop, down the mighty M1 motorway, to the client who’s £250,000 (yep, Tor was wrong with the figures) water jet steel cutter machine wasn’t connecting to their Windows 2003 server.
The control software runs over DOS and they simply cannot get to the drawings and software on the server.
It took me a bit to get back into the swing of ye olde DOS software, but 3 hours later and it works!!
Much to my amusement, the 2 Swedish engineers had been fighting this for 2 days and got nowhere!

Success!!
This made my week :D

The panic was explained when the client pointed out that there was a training session for the guys using the machine tomorrow (Today – Saturday) and there were already orders for production on this new toy.

Whilst discussing the IT stuff after the problem was fixed, the MD gave me a “while you are here, can you just…” I fixed it while we were talking!

It’s nice to be of use – and hopefully we gained a new client on a longer term…

New new

New install yesterday,
As you know we like these.
I was a little apprehensive when the guy who cabled the office was there ‘fixing’ the network cables and said “you’re going to have problems here…”.
After head banging for a loooooong day, he was getting a little sick of the ‘weird’ issues.
After adding my expertise we found the client had managed to damage the cables themselves by some over vigorous clipping to the skirting.

lol!!

The poor guy had done the client a ‘favour’ and not charged for the cabling.
Simon smiles ruefully as the favour bites the generous guy right in the ass!!

Also in the same office, network point 3 was ‘always dodgy’, the shredder packed in, a brand new filing cabinet drawer was stuck AND the aforementioned cabling problems.

My bit worked perfectly!! :D
Ha!
