What Our Clients Say…

This is a personal testimonial in favour of Simon Rochester.

I have had the pleasure to work alongside Simon throughout many technical cases with several major accounts during his time at Compaq.

I am extremely sorry to see him leave Compaq. His technical ability as a technical specialist has been most welcomed both by me and my team and also by our Customers.

Simon’s pleasant and cheerful disposition and commitment to ‘making things happen’ along with achieving results is often a welcomed…

Electric Cars Failure

So sayeth Simon
On the Feb 23 12

Tesla Roadster

Do BEVs (Battery Electric Vehicle) suffer from a discharging issue that completely ruins the car?

Like the car?  :w00t:

Its a Tesla Roadster, one of a range of BEVs (or Battery Electric Vehicle) currently on the market, and one of the most sexy IMO  – you could also try the Nissan Leaf, though it’s not quite as nice looking…

Well, there appears to be a furore over whether or not these cars suffer from a problem with the battery which causes the cars to completely fail – or become ‘Bricked’ (i.e. becomes like a brick read this Urban Dictionary).

From the looks of things there is a problem if the batteries completely discharge for a length of time – those of you with Laptops know this very issue – the battery refuses to recharge resulting in a bricked car.

There are 2 major problems arising from this:

In the case of the Tesla it seems that if you don’t charge the car for some time it will become bricked; although this sounds unlikely, imagine parking at an airport for an extended holiday, or in one case, shipping the car to another country.

There is some discussion over the truth of these claims however – some people are lambasting the whistle-blower and saying that this situation is highly unlikely to happen (and both Tesla and Nissan say this is the case) – some people are saying that it’s a problem inherent in the battery technology and is likely to happen.

Personally I’m in the latter camp – eventually all batteries fail, and these are no exception; both Tesla and Nissan have a procedure for replacing them, and of course this service costs £££s. If there isn’t a problem why have a procedure?

I guess the truth will out eventually, but it’s an interesting discussion nonetheless…
