It's annoying when you pass referrals but people don't even have the courtesy to say thank you :-(
There was a ‘dire’ emergency yesterday.
Whilst ‘cleaning’ a laptop of rubbish (software no longer used, spyware and temp stuff etc.)
Tor called and asks:
“What do you know about DOS?” – Simon has flashbacks over a 10 year period…
“A client has just spent £120,000 on IT equipment and it doesn’t work!” – Sounds interesting…
So off I pop, down the mighty M1 motorway, to the client who’s £250,000 (yep, Tor was wrong with the figures) water jet steel cutter machine wasn’t connecting to their Windows 2003 server.
The control software runs over DOS and they simply cannot get to the drawings and software on the server.
It took me a bit to get back into the swing of ye olde DOS software, but 3 hours later and it works!!
Much to my amusement, the 2 Swedish engineers had been fighting this for 2 days and got nowhere! 
Success!!
This made my week 
The panic was explained when the client pointed out that there was a training session for the guys using the machine tomorrow (Today – Saturday) and there were already orders for production on this new toy.
Whilst discussing the IT stuff after the problem was fixed, the MD gave me a “while you are here, can you just…†I fixed it while we were talking!
It’s nice to be of use – and hopefully we gained a new client on a longer term…
