Weird problems

So sayeth Simon
On the May 16 06

Had a busy day today.
The morning was spent with a client wanting a simple PC install and backup of the MD’s emails.
Off to the install – couldn’t get the IP address range for the PC – ages spent contacting the relevent parties.
Finally got it and left for the head office 5 minutes later.
Backup the MD’s mail – first had to clean lots of spyware and install the PST backup add-in to Outlook.
Cleaning and installing and backing up type tasks later – PST too big to fit to the CD-RW :(
Simon is now behind on his schedule again – nothing unusual there then ;)

I snook into the office for some buttiness – 3rd time I manage lunch this month :)

Off to this afternoons fun…

Meet a client at an office – sign off the order for his new kit – A new startup business – we like! :)
Quick fix for the backup – the backup software couldn’t backup its own database

Then the most weird problem I have EVER seen:
2 network points on a wall (points 4 & 21)
Connecting to a patch panel, then into a switch. Easy…
Cables test ok using a stoopidly expensive tester. Tested ok.
Connect PC to port 4 – sloooooow connection (very low ping times) :(
Connect PC to port 21 – intermittent connection :(
Swap ports on switch with a known good – 4 slow, 21 nada :(
SWap patch leads for a known good – 4 slow, 21 nada :(
Connect PC direct into switch – all good :)

Problem with cables between wall and patch panel? Tested the tester on a known fault – T Ok :)
retest cables – fine – odd???

Here’s the really odd part – plug a line splitter into port 4 – 2 ports now down the cable from port 4, into the switch.
spilt again at the patch panel and connect both ends to the switch.
Connect PC to one of the split lines.
The PC connects perfectly and runs at a normal speed – ??????
Weird!!!

Simon
